Do anime-makers think that fans of a video game would lap up an anime adaptation of that game, with the same nonsensical plot, dull animation (like watching someone actually play that game on TV), but without the fun of playing the game and controlling the characters? I guess so, and that’s why we get Tales of Symphonia.
Unfortunately, I never played the game, so nothing about the anime is endearing to me, nor does the anime have any sentimental value that it undoubtedly has for fans of the game. The plot makes no sense (random not-very-attractive girl becomes “the chosen one”, must make a dangerous journey to save the world, blah blah blah), the action is uninteresting (who wants to watch animation that looks like that out of an old Gamecube game?). In fact, the animation and character design is so poor, I was shocked to discover that Akira Matsushima of Rurouni Kenshin OVA fame was involved in the production (source).
I’m dropping Tales of Symphonia after one episode. Yuck.
By the way, Rurouni Kenshin OVA is the bestest evah!
